What does this curious creature remind you of? 🎸
Meet the Shovelnose Guitarfish: named after its long, pointed snout and guitar-shaped body! Because of its appearance, early scientists first thought it was a shark. Later, it was thought to be intermediate between sharks and rays, and recent studies have confirmed that these unique animals are rays most closely related to skates. They belong to the class of Chondrichthyes with sharks and chimaeras! 🦈
Guitarfish can be found in southwestern North America and love seeking out shallow coastal waters near sandy shores, rocky reefs, and seagrass beds 🔎
